Movember – Prostate Cancer Awareness

This post is about something that needs to be addressed. It is November which marks the start of MOVEMBER. Movember is a month long charity event where guys (Mo Bros) grow their moustaches and in the process raise money and awareness for prostate cancer.

The rules are pretty simple. On the 1st of November Mo Bros register with a clean shaven face. They then spend the rest of the month growing and grooming their moustache. During the course of the month, Mo Bros seek sponsorship with all money raised being donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand who will use the funds to create awareness, increase support networks for men who suffer from prostate cancer, fund research and scholarship programs.

I’m sure a few of you will agree with me when I say men do not go to the doctor for regular check-ups and are not so willing to do so when feeling a little under the weather. Last Movember, prostate cancer awareness reached high levels and it also had a major spin-off for men’s health generally. The aim is to change attitudes towards male health and make it fun by putting a moustache on the face of New Zealand men.

My colleagues and I at Pfizer NZ Ltd (PGM) are banding together to raise awareness and as much money as we can. As was the case last year, our employer will be matching (dollar for dollar) what we manage to raise.

I am asking for your support and am appealing to you all to donate whatever you can. Donations can be made via the Movember site or the ChipIn widget (ChipIn donations are quick and easy if you have a PayPal account – Sign up Here). I will update this post with details on how to donate via the Movember site once our team registration has been completed.

I thank you for taking the time to read this post and really appreciate your donation. It is all for a very good cause.

That sounds like a good idea and a great cause to raise awareness for, but I wonder – why mustaches? What do they have to do with prostate cancer? I think they should shave their heads and show what would happen if cancer was found and they underwent chemo…good luck with it though.

    Hi Sydney,

It is a very good idea. I am not sure why they chose moustaches for the campaign. Maybe they saw them as something that all me can grow willingly and draw attention to them. You are right in saying that a shaved head would be better but how many men would be willing to do that? It would be funny to have a nation with a lot of bald people going about daily business. It is pretty funny at the moment seeing the number of guys around with moustaches who usually don’t have them.

    Gerri
