As part of the project, they need photos of various items to do with the world cup and one of those items happened to be the RWC Countdown Clock, which is located in central Auckland. They did a Google image search and stumbled upon the photo I took which they seemed to like.

They got in touch with me about the photo and made me an offer (which was in the hundreds) for a copy for them to use on their publication. Unfortunately, the photo did not meet their requirements because they wanted one that was at least 300 dpi. I took the shot at 72 dpi, which is well below their requirements. They did ask for a copy of it to see if they could tweak it and make it work for them but they could only get it to 200 dpi.

This experience served as a lesson to take images at the best possible resolution. In the case of the countdown clock, I was limited because of the camera I had on me at the time (an old and simple point & shot).

From this and other experiences I have been through there are 3 tips that come to mind that may come in handy for people who take photos and upload them onto blogs/websites for the world to see. They are:

Take High Resolution Photos – make sure to take photos at the best possible resolution for the reasons above.

Watermark Images – besides branding your photos, a watermark protects your images from theft. If someone wants to use your photo, they would need to get in touch with you to make an arrangement for an ‘un-watermarked’ version. I use Adobe Photoshop for photo editing and watermarking.

Optimise For Search Engines – this is easy to do and could help photos rank well in for example Google Image Search. Search Engine Optimization: Your visual blueprint for effective Internet marketing by Kris Jones has a section on how to do just that.

You may end up in a situation similar to the one that I did and if it does happen, I hope you are in a position where you actually earn some money for your photos.

For up-to-date ideas on how to make money with Photos, click HERE

Last year I wrote a post about making money with your photo’s (Earn With Your Photos – Shutterstock + Photrade) which included a short paragraph on Photrade and what they have to offer. Photrade is one of the few start-ups I have written about that is still up and running but not only are they still up and running, they are growing from strength to strength.

Their site caters to pro and amateur photographers alike and you don’t have to go through the rigmarole of submitting your best sample photo’s to be approved as a photo submitter as is the case with the likes of Shutterstock and istockphoto. With Photrade you can upload whatever you want and chose what you share and with whom. They offer a watermarking and theft protection feature so you can be rest assured that people are not getting a hold of and using your images for free.

As far as making money with your photos is concerned, you set the prices for how much you want your photos to sell for and you can set standard prices for all of them or you can set them at an individual level. You get to keep 80% of the markup made on sales; for example, if you sell a photo that has a base price of $1 for $5 you earn $3.20 ($5 sale price – $1 base price = $4 markup – 20% commission = $3.20). People can order various size prints, canvases, merchandise and stock licenses of your images. You really don’t have to be a pro to sell your photos and I have proof; Here is a random photo that I uploaded that has sold on Photrade:

Sell photos on photrade By Gerri

The second way through which you can make money with Photrade is through their adcosystem where photographers get paid a share of the ad revenue generated every time their photos are viewed. This applies to photos viewed on Photrade and anywhere else on the internet where a publisher has grabbed it using the sharing code. Ad revenue is deposited on the 1st of every month for the month before. Earnings are paid out via PayPal (once you have reached a minimum of $15.00) or you can use the balance to purchase items on Photrade.

Photrade also boasts a one of a kind contest platform that allows users to set up and run photo contests. You also get the chance to take part in contest where you can win some really good prizes. At the moment, digital Photography School is running a contest (contest ends – Friday, October 31, 2008 at 00:00 EST) about portraits which amongst other things has a Canon Xsi or Nikon D60 camera with 18-55mm lens (the winners choice) as the first prize. For those of you who have not heard of digital Photography school, it is a site run by Darren Rowse (problogger) with tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your camera.

Vote for my photo!vote

If you haven’t already taken a look at what they have to offer it is well worth it. Here is a video that explains what Photrade is all about:

If you are in New Zealand or have visited and have a camera, chances are you have captured a number of breathtaking images of it landscape, people, architecture and anything else that is New Zealand.

mychillybin which went online this month was created to give people access to quality royalty-free images on everything Kiwi because there wasn’t any other site like it around. This presents you, the photographer with the opportunity to cash in on your images of New Zealand. Becoming a mychillybin photographer is pretty simple and only involves you submitting three varied images so that they can see what you are made off. Once accepted you will need to upload some photo ID and provide them with a few details such as you address and bank account details and you are on your way to earning some money.

They charge members between NZ$25 and NZ$100 per image purchased depending on its size and licence type. The photographer gets to pocket 35-40% and you could stand to make a fair amount of money depending on how frequently your images are downloaded. Mychillybin is not limited to people who live in New Zealand. People overseas can take advantage of this opportunity to earn from the images they have of New Zealand. They only thing is that at the moment you have to have a New Zealand bank account in order to receive payment. So, if you were or are in New Zealand as a tourist, student, worker or whatever else you could have an account piling up with spending money for the next time you return or to even finance your entire trip (if you are that lucky). Check them out and see if your images of New Zealand can earn you a bit of cash.

There are so many people around the world who go through this daily.

GoSee4Me solves this problem by allowing its members to submit a request for an image or images. GoSee4Me members within the vicinity of the ‘thing’ that needs to be photographed are notified about the request. These members can then log in to submit a bid to provide the requested photo(s). The member requesting the images then selects who they want to take the photo(s) based on the bid price and history rating of the photo takers. Once the images have been taken they are delivered to the requester via the GoSee4Me website.

As a photo taker you could earn yourself a few extra dollars in your spare time for something that may only take you a few minutes to complete. Payments are paid out via PayPal within 72 hours after the required photos have been submitted. During the 72 hour period, the photo(s) are evaluated to see that they meet the requester’s requirements.

Stop by and check them out and maybe even get snapping. It may be worth your while.

If you are one of them, one thing that you most probably have stocked up is good photos that you don’t know what to do with. Have you considered selling them online? There are a number of sites where you can upload your photos and get paid for them.

One such service is Shutterstock. You get paid $0.25 each time an image of yours is downloaded. Once you have reached $500 in earnings, the rate goes up to $0.30 per download. What are the chances of your image being downloaded at Shutterstock? Based on the subscription model they run I think the chances are high. Buyers subscribe on a monthly basis and can upload up to 750 images over the course of 30 days. You can upload as many images as you like and this will only increase your earning potential. The minimum payout amount is $75 with payments being made monthly via cheque, PayPal or Moneybookers.

If you are looking for something that seems to be a little fun, there is also the option of a relatively new service, Photrade. Here you not only make money from your photos but from ad revenue as well. With Photrade, you upload your photos to their site and set your price on how much you want to sell them for. It has a ‘fun’ feel to it and also lets you share photos with family and friends. At the moment payments are made via PayPal. You withdraw money from your Photrade account to your PayPal account with $10 being the minimum withdrawal amount.

If you have photos hidden away that you think people may be able to use there is no harm in giving Shutterstock and Photrade a try. They may even be a place where you can look for images to use for whatever it is you may need specific photos for.
