How to delete your child’s musical.ly account

Tech and the internet are two wonderful things. When these two collide (with a little bit of creativity thrown in the mix), there is no limit to the number of amazing things that can be brought to life. For the most part, these creations are brought to life with good intentions. When used well, they can bring a world of good full of entertainment, education, productivity and whole lot more. But, undesirable elements can creep into the mix and wreak havoc!

The kids of today are exposed to tech and connectedness right from the get go and it doesn’t take long before they too need to get a daily fix. They end up with iPads/tablets or smartphones (in some cases both) from a very early age. These devices are great tools for entertaining and educating.

And then there comes a point in time where there are the constant requests to download this app and that app. A number of the requests are for social networking apps with that list being endless! The want and need for these apps is very driven by their friends who are on them and interacting with each other.

As a parent it is very easy to give into the requests especially when you are constantly hearing about friend A, B and C using the app. Sometimes, we give in without doing any due diligence to find out what the apps are all about, their appropriateness and potential safety concerns.

One app that seems to be quite popular with kids at the moment is musical.ly. But, there have been warnings put out via various channels warning parents on the potential dangers of using the app. These include exposing children to content that they may be too young to understand such as suicide, pornography and other graphic content. And of course not to mention, the possible presence of predators looking to target and groom children for unspeakable purposes.

Without going into too much detail on what dangers may lay in wait, you as a parent may have come to the conclusion that musical.ly is not suitable for your child (or children). Filled with this conviction, you decide for them to delete the app and their account.

But, what you will notice when you search through the app settings is that there is no option to delete a user account. That’s because, musical.ly doesn’t have that option at the moment.

To delete my child’s account, I had to take a round about method which involved submitting a ticket via their support system and requesting they delete the account. Even within their support system, there isn’t an option to ask for account deletion just for the sake of it.

Anyhow, the first message I sent requesting account deletion included the account details and a brief outline on the reasons for the request. They responded within 24 hours asking for the following:

Please provide us with the following information:
* Full name of child
* Username (found in the profile page, under the profile picture, displayed as “@xxxxxx”)
* Birthdate

After providing them with this information, the account was deleted within 24 hours and they sent a notification to that effect.

I did ask what other parents in a similar situation should do to delete their children’s accounts. Their response was, all that you need to do to get an account deleted is send an email through to support @ musical.ly.

    I have tried several times to delete my account but I can’t. It’s so frustrating to have a social media account that you re not allowed to delete the service whenever you feel like. I wonder why they don’t give you the option to do so.

      Hey Eric,
      Thanks for stopping by. Yes, I too was a bit bemused that it was launched without the option to delete an account. That is something that should be a simple and straightforward process.

    Oh my god I feel bad for your kids. Let them enjoy life! Schools give lessons on internet safety, your kids KNOW how to avoid the bad things that come from the internet. When I was younger I used to use musical.ly, and I never came across porn or suicide mentions. Never I’m my life.
    The app has staff to delete those videos as soon as the pop up. I’m not trying to be horrid – but they’ve you gotta be that one annoyingly over protective parent??

    • Gerri January 7, 2018 at 6:28 pm #

      Hey there,
      thanks for stopping by. I do appreciate your comment and I respect your opinion and how you feel about the way I chose to parent. Not all kids are taught about internet safety and at the end of the day, even if they are, kids can be very easily influenced. Yes, the app may have staff that attend to damaging content but, there are always exceptions that slip through the cracks. All that I am trying to do is protect my children and at the same time, letting them enjoy life (in a safe and healthy environment)!

      Gerri don’t let the troll bother you. If he/she is a parent, he/she is a lazy, uninvolved one.

        Hey Lorri,
        Thanks for the support! Much appreciated!

    Thank you for this! We need to monitor our children more. With this post, I was able to reach out to Musical.lys and request the account for my child be removed. Now if we can just wipe out SnapChat.

    For an app with 90 million users, it’s crazy that you can’t 1) bulk delete anything, 2) just purge it all and the account. I found your entry trying to deal with my own similar situation. As mentioned above, kids, even when they know how to be “safe online” there’s always something, not to mention all the weirdos and perverts out there who save and re-share things.

    Let me break it down for “Annoyed” like a fraction: they’ve been teaching young people online safety for years. Heck, they used to teach that you shouldn’t give your name, school, or birthdate to *anyone* now we’ve jumped to “well, videos and pictures are safe though.” If 15 years of warnings and cautions to students about safety online worked, we wouldn’t have young girls disappearing from time to time after giving out just a little bit too much info or thinking “well, he may be 25 years old but we have a lot in common!”

    Keep up the good work Gerri, this was helpful, and made me even more irritated at these crappy programmers.

      Hey Tony, thanks for stopping by. One of the items that are at the top of my priority list is looking after and protecting my kids. And I’d also like to think that there are other people in my situation out there hence why I felt the need to share my experience. Take care!

    Read this! No child should be exposed to the content allowed on musically. This will make you shiver! https://medium.com/@anastasiabasilcunningham/porn-is-not-the-worst-thing-on-musical-ly-5df07ab842af

    I NEED TO KNOW how to delete my child’s account. I tried emailing musically and it’s different email addresses more than several times. I’m very frustrated.

      I’m having the same issue getting my 11 year old’s account deleted. In the meantime, I changed her password, made her account private, unfollowed everyone she was following, and blocked anyone that followed her or viewed or liked her stuff.
